Baja California Sur is the southern half of the peninsula: desert between the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. Los Cabos, at the tip, is the resort end, with El Arco and a long corridor of hotels; La Paz, the capital, has calm bays like Balandra and boat trips to Isla Espíritu Santo. On the Pacific side, gray whales calve in lagoons such as San Ignacio and Magdalena Bay from about January to March.
