Cancún vs Riviera Maya
Same sea, same airport, pretty different trips. Here's how they actually differ, and which one fits yours.

Short trip, first time in Mexico, or here for the nightlife? Stay in Cancún: you're on the beach half an hour after landing. Want cenotes, ruins and reef you can swim to from shore? Head south to the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen if you want everything walkable, Tulum if you want the beach-club look and don't mind paying for it. Can't decide? Split the trip; they're an hour apart.

- You want to be on the sand within half an hour of landing.
- It's a short trip, and two hours of transfer each way would eat into it.
- You like a big resort, a strip you can bus along, and nightlife close by.
- Isla Mujeres as a day trip sounds like enough adventure.
Start with Cancún's beaches or Isla Mujeres, a short ferry across the bay.
Pick the Riviera Maya if…
- You want cenotes, ruins and reef you can swim to from the beach.
- You'd rather stay in a town you can walk around, like Playa del Carmen or Tulum, or somewhere quiet between them.
- You're fine renting a car or spending an hour or more on the transfer.
- A beach bar beats a nightclub.

Which is better, Cancún or the Riviera Maya?
Neither, on paper. Cancún wins on convenience and nightlife: short transfer, big resorts, lots going on. The Riviera Maya wins on variety: cenotes, ruins, reef close to shore and towns with more character. Same sea, same airport; the real difference is how far you drive and what's outside your hotel.
How far is the Riviera Maya from Cancún airport?
It depends where. Puerto Morelos is a short hop, Playa del Carmen is about an hour, and Tulum is closer to two hours by road. Tulum also has its own airport now, with fewer routes than Cancún.
Which has better beaches, Cancún or the Riviera Maya?
Cancún's are wider and more uniform, with calm water on the north-facing stretch and bigger waves on the east-facing side. The Riviera Maya's are more varied, from busy town beaches in Playa del Carmen to reef-sheltered bays like Akumal and quieter sand toward Tulum.
Is the Riviera Maya more expensive than Cancún?
Not as a rule. Both run from budget hotels to very expensive all-inclusives. The cheapest beds are in downtown Cancún and Playa del Carmen, away from the sand; Tulum's beach hotels are the pricey end. Compare specific hotels rather than regions.
Can you do Cancún and the Riviera Maya in one trip?
Easily. Playa del Carmen is about an hour from Cancún, so a split stay works well: a few nights in the Hotel Zone, then a few in Playa or Tulum for cenotes and ruins.
Does sargassum affect both?
Yes. Sargassum seaweed washes up along this whole coast, mostly in the summer months, and it changes from week to week and beach to beach. Cancún's north-facing beaches, on the Isla Mujeres side, tend to get less of it than the open coast.
