Family-friendly beaches in Mexico
With kids, the water matters more than the view. Look for shallow, sheltered beaches with a lifeguard, some shade and a bathroom nearby. The Caribbean side and the Sea of Cortez have plenty; much of the open Pacific is better for watching waves than for swimming in them.

What to look for
- A gradual, sandy entry rather than a steep shelf or rocks.
- A lifeguard on duty, and a flag you can see from your towel.
- Shade: palapas, trees or room for your own umbrella.
- Bathrooms, food and drinks within a short walk.
- How far it is to the nearest clinic, especially with babies.
- What the flag says that day. Calm last week doesn't mean calm today.

- Cenotes are freshwater swimming holes. Many rent life jackets, and the open ones are easier with small kids than the cave-like ones.
- During turtle nesting season, local conservation groups run hatchling releases on some beaches. Ask where you're staying.
