Snorkel without the damage
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, or cover up with a rash vest. Marine parks and cenotes often insist.
- Don't touch or stand on coral. Fins kick up sand, so keep them off the bottom.
- Give turtles and rays space, and never chase them for a photo.
- Snorkel with a buddy, and wear a vest if you're not a strong swimmer.
- Check the flag and the current before you go in. Calm yesterday doesn't mean calm today.

Where is the best snorkeling in Mexico?
The Mesoamerican Reef along the Caribbean coast is the big draw: Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Akumal all have reef or lagoons close to shore. On the Sea of Cortez, Cabo Pulmo's protected reef is worth the drive, and the cenotes around Tulum offer freshwater snorkeling.
What is the best time of year to snorkel in Mexico?
Spring usually brings the calmest, clearest water, before the summer storms. The water is warm year-round, and whale sharks visit the Caribbean coast roughly from June to September.
Do you need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel in Mexico?
No. Plenty of lagoons, bays and cenotes are shallow and calm, and vests are usually available. Choose a protected bay over the open coast if you're a beginner, and always snorkel with a buddy.
