Veracruz has the longest Gulf coastline of any state, and its beaches are where Mexican families go on holiday more than international tour groups. The port city of Veracruz has a busy malecón and city beaches running south into Boca del Río; Costa Esmeralda, to the north, is quieter. Inland are El Tajín near Papantla, the river town of Tlacotalpan and the coffee country around Xalapa.
