Eleven states and about 7,800 km of shore, from the cold surf of Baja California down to the long, empty beaches of Chiapas. The Sea of Cortez (the Gulf of California) sits between the peninsula and the mainland, with calmer, warmer water on its side. Further south come the resort bays of Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and Huatulco, and surf towns like Sayulita and Puerto Escondido. Rain, and the odd hurricane, come between June and October.
