Caribbean coast

The east side of the Yucatán Peninsula: Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel and the islands off the coast, all in Quintana Roo. A reef runs offshore along much of it, so the water is often calm and good for snorkeling, and inland there are cenotes (flooded sinkholes) and Maya sites like Tulum and Cobá. Sargassum seaweed can pile up on the beaches from spring into late summer. Yucatán state is grouped here too, though its own beaches face the Gulf.
